Underwater Sculptures

Published May 3, 2013 by Jill London

Recently I found a truly amazing picture of this underwater statue, Christ of the Abyss, at the wonderful hauntedshoreline. So I went investigating and found more pictures of underwater statues that have been placed in various sites around the world. These statues were completely new to me and creepily cool, I think.

Christ of the Abyss is a bronze statue of Jesus, located in the Mediterranean Sea off San Fruttuoso on the Italian Riviera. It was placed in the water on 22 August 1954 at approximately 17 metres depth, and stands c. 2.5 metres tall. The sculpture was created by Guido Galletti after an idea of Italian diver Duilio Marcante.

There are more sculptures located in the Caribbean ocean off the west coast of Grenada, West Indies, by Jason deCaires Taylor. You can find out more here: These stunning sculptures are, we are told, environmentally friendly. They will eventually become a ‘natural’ reef some day and are already home to a number of species, including peacock flounder, juvenile striped parrot fish, banded coral shrimp, and fire worms.
